Anonymous asked: Hello, I'm a aspiring photographer from Brisbane and I was just wondering if you could give me some advice, i really want to be a music photographer but have no idea how to get into it, or how to even get media passes, how did you start out? I love your work! You don't have to answer if you don't want to :)

Hiiiii :)

When starting out as a music photographer, shoot as many local shows as you can so you can get to know your camera and all it’s capabilities. Make a Facebook page where you upload your photos and people can see and like them/your page. Promote that as much as you can. Post the link on every social networking site you use, get your friends to share your page. Anything to get your name out there so people can see your work. After you’ve shot a few shows, are comfortable with what you’re doing, confident with your work and feel like you’re ready for the bigger shows, apply as a contributor for music websites. Australian Musician Network, Tone Deaf and The 59th Sound are all great sites, and I’m sure there’s other sites that you may know of that I don’t!

It’s really hard to get paid in this industry. You won’t get paid for shooting for websites. Your best chance is to build connections with bands in your local scene. They may not pay you to begin with, but once they start getting bigger, they might start paying you. Even if they don’t though, they could always help you out by getting you photo passes for bigger shows that they play. It’s all about who you know when it comes to that sort of thing really.

I started out in 2010. The first show I ever shot was Tonight Alive’s first ever headline show. From there, I shot all of their Sydney shows for the next year or so. Some required passes, which most of the time Jenna was nice enough to help me out in getting those. In 2011, I started contributing for FasterLouder and was shooting for them every so often. It was hard for me to get a lot of shows because I was only 17 and for a lot of show you had to be 18+ for OHS things. In 2012 I signed up with The 59th Sound and had begun shooting fairly regularly for FL. I’d also started studying my Diploma of Photoimaging and it was the best thing I’ve done. I know so much more now, things I wouldn’t have known if I hadn’t studied. That is what really helped me in becoming a better photographer. Towards the end of 2012 I signed up with Tone Deaf, who I have shot most of the shows I have for. They’ve been really good to me. March this year I signed up with Australian Musician Network and they’ve been amazing. The heart and soul of their publication is Australian music and they do a lot in terms of our music industry. They’re very easy going but extremely hard working.

It hasn’t always been easy. I’ve gone through a few dry spells where I wouldn’t be shooting for months, but that wasn’t through lack of trying. There’s a lot of photographers around nowadays and sometimes you don’t always get what you apply for. Don’t get disheartened, it’s only fair that everyone gets a chance to shoot. That was my mistake. I got disheartened and it really got to me and there have been a few times I’ve actually thought about quitting and doing a tourism course. But photography, concert and portraiture in particular, is my heart and soul and I’ll keep going until I can’t go no more.

I hope this helps! Sorry for the essay, once I start talking about something I love, I can’t stop til I’ve said it all! Haha

Let me know if you wanna know anything else :) xx
